»Nano-Journeys« is an interactive adventure tour into the worlds of the micro- and nano-cosmos. On three different tours the »nanotourist« can choose to scale down step by step either into a human arm, into a computer’s processor, or into the LED of a car’s headlights and to penetrate the smallest dimensions of our known universe.
The edutainment project has the goal to create enthusiasm for scientific subjects by actively and emotionally addressing people without giving a lecture.
The complex subjects behind the travel routes can be experienced through play and exploration. Experiencing and discovering are in the foreground – information does not push its way to the front.
Like on a real journey a suitcase which is available at any time contains helpful utensils for travelling. Among them a virtual »tour guide« with short background information on the respective stage of the journey as well as a »route planner«, which can be used to jump within and between the routes.
Idea and concept originated in a diploma thesis at the University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden. Two years later the unusual journey was expanded in co-operation with scientists of the VDI Technology Centre and with funds by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research and implemented in two languages.
